[edit] Universal Design for Learning Instructional Units

NCSC has developed a set of Instructional Units to serve as examples for educators. These Instructional Units are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and incorporate principles of Universal Design for learning, an approach to curriculum development that makes instruction and assessment accessible for all learners. Universal Design for Learning principles provide guidelines for building curriculum that utilizes multiple means of presentation and allows the learner to work and respond in a format that meets their needs for learning and expression.

The Instructional Units are based on general education lessons that are universally designed for all students and walk the educator through the process of adapting materials and providing accomodations that assist emerging readers and communicators in the classroom. Each unit is made up of several lessons and a culminating activity, all of which provide examples for meeting the unique needs of students with significant cognitive disabilities.

Each lesson in the unit first presents objectives and essential questions for the lesson which are followed by several components:

  • Materials and Vocabulary
  • Introduction
  • Body
  • Practice
  • Closure
  • Resources
